Training out line for a Circular Saw Filer

Within the Forest Industry there appears to be a shortage of qualified Benchman and Circular Saw Filers for the Filing Room.  If you are presently looking and advertising for one of these positions and have not been able to fill either one, then you should consider training from within.

A. G. Saw-Doc Consulting Inc. is available to fill this need.  I have been a Saw Filer for over 35 years, a Head Filer for the last 17 years working on the West Coast of British Columbia.  I have extensive knowledge of all aspects of saw filing and I am able to give your Saw Filers the required skills to maintain both Band Saws and Circular Saws.

There’s no substitute for hands-on experience!  Your saw filer will have the opportunity to learn, practice and hone their technique on your company premises.  They will learn on the same saws you are using every day and this is invaluable in terms of time-savings, productivity, and skill retention.  There is no better method of training than using your “Saws” in your “Filing Room”.  The Filer gets first hand knowledge of how these saws are performing and will be able to learn the techniques that meet the needs and expectations for your sawmill.  They will be getting hands on training that’s designed to fit their needs and not just some basic training which is designed for a the general application of saw filing.  This training will be designed to make your saws run on your equipment and this means that your saw filer will be given professional instruction which allows him to perform their duties with increased efficiency which is – a big pay-off in the work place.

The process for training a Circular Saw Filer is a little different than training a Saw Filer to become a Benchperson.  More time is needed to train your Saw Filer on circular saws.  Generally speaking the process of advancement calls for your Saw Filer to have completed the Circular training and have the basic knowledge of saw maintenance.

The Saw Fitter moving onto circular saws needs to understand the basics of saw tensioning, tight and open, saw vibration, basic feeds and speeds, as well as saw leveling and using the stretcher roll.  Without a sound foundation on the basic of circular saw maintenance, the process of learning to work on circular saws can be extremely difficult.

My recommendation is to allow for a full 10 days of training that would be very similar to Benching Band Saws but with a lot more theory, along with more hands on experience so you’re Saw Filer can better relate to theories of the operation of Circular Saws.

Since the process of benching band saws is not much different than benching round saws, generally the round saw filer already has a good understanding of saw operation and saw theories so the time spent on training is to show how these theories now relate to band saws.

Please realize that this process will not make a qualified Filer, what it will do is give the saw filer the basic of benching which will allow him or her to handle most of the day to day needs of the sawmill and keep your saws running.  It will give them the ability to try new procedures which will improve their ability and understanding.  There will always be something which comes along that will challenge their ability.  They will have the basic knowledge to ask better questions so that these challenges can be resolved.

As they gain experience their self confidents will grow, their knowledge will improve and they will become fully qualified to be a Benchperson or a Circular Saw Filer
