AG Saw-Doc: One sharp business

PORT ALBERNI - With 35 years as a saw filer and experience in every aspect of saw filing, George Brubaker created AG Saw-Doc Consulting Inc. at 2240 – 15th Avenue in Port Alberni on January 1 of this year.
His purpose, he says, is problem analysis. However, he notes that he goes far beyond troubleshooting.  There probably isn’t an aspect of working with saws that he doesn’t know from the ground up.  He has worked on every type and size of saw including the largest in North America, a band saw that measures 61 feet long by 16 feet wide.
He also has extensive experience with bandmills, edging equipment, conventional sawing, counter cut sawing and over head edgers.  He has developed and maintained manual size control programs and has installed, maintained, and worked on real time size control systems used on headsaws, resaws, and edgers.  He also has extensive experience with saw control systems which measure sawing deviations.
The biggest challenge facing sawmills today is a lack of skilled labour, Brubaker says, and that’s where his company can help with its focus on saw filer training.
“There are half a dozen mills looking for saw filers right now,” he says.  “So I’m proposing that if they have someone who is available in the mill to do that work, then I’m available to go in and train them.  They may not be a benchman but they may be ready to be one and I can get them there.
    ”
Since opening his doors for business at the beginning of 2007, Brubaker says he has focused his energy on advertising.  He’s now ready to go out into the field.
He adds that there is a real need in the industry across the entire country for people with his unique set of skills and experience and his plans for growth take that into account.
“I plan to become known in the industry not only here in BC but across Canada.  I’ll want to bring in people with the same values and beliefs that I have so that we can expand and look at all of North America – and the world for that matter.”
