The SAWMILL SAW FILER
A. JOB SUMMARY—He is responsible for proper cutting and operation of all saws in plant. Sharpens, sets, swages, files, grinds, hammer, tensions, and repairs saws. Also takes care of saw guides and band wheels.
B. EQUIPMENT—Saw stretchers, hammers, anvils, saw, saw gummers, swaging machine, hand swage, spring sets, saw grinders, welding equipment.
C. QUALIFICATIONS—Requirements:
1.) Must have a knowledge of all saw types, and should know how to perform various operations listed above.
2.) Must be able to tell by action of saw and by looking at sawn lumber whether saw is sawing properly.
3.) Must have a knowledge of lumber characteristics, species, density, knots, grain, etc.
4.) Must know how to weld and use welding equipment so as to weld teeth and broken saws.
5.) Must have a knowledge of figures so he can figure saw pitch and tooth space.
6.) Must know how to change and handle all types of saws safely and without loss of time.
7.) Must be careful workman. Proper swaging and flattening results in better lumber.
8.) Good eyesight and good judgment are necessary when filing and setting saws.
9.) Should know properties of steel and other metals such as tension, density, etc., so that he can properly hammer, tension, and weld them.
D. OPERATING RULES AND PROCEDURES.
1.) Never work on saw or saw machinery before shutting it off.
2.) Wear goggles when filing, welding, buffing, etc.
3.) Keep all machinery in proper operating condition.
4.) Notify millwright if work can’t be done by filer.
5.) Always have an ample supply of saws and saw parts ready to be used.
6.) Use gloves when handling saws.
7.) Never grip teeth when handling saws.
8.) Check and keep band wheels and guides properly aligned.
9.) Never run a saw with crack in it over one-tenth width of plate.
